Cannabis Concentrates Explained: Wax, Shatter, Live Resin, and What to Buy First

March 26, 2026

If you've been buying flower for a while and someone at the dispensary mentioned concentrates, you might have nodded along without fully knowing what they were talking about. That's more common than you'd think. Concentrates are a big category with a lot of unfamiliar terms — shatter, wax, live resin, rosin, distillate — and it can feel like you need a glossary just to browse the shelf.

This is that glossary. We'll break down what concentrates actually are, what separates one type from another, how to consume them, and how to figure out where to start if you've never tried them.

What Makes Something a Concentrate?

The basic idea is extraction. Cannabis flower contains cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBG, etc.) and terpenes, but those compounds are locked inside plant material — stems, cellulose, chlorophyll, all the stuff you're not trying to consume. Concentrates are made by separating those desirable compounds from everything else, leaving behind a product with dramatically higher potency than flower.

Where flower typically runs 15–30% THC, concentrates commonly come in at 60–90% or higher. That doesn't mean concentrates are inherently dangerous, but it does mean the math is completely different. A small amount goes a long way.

The Main Types You'll See at a Dispensary

Shatter

Shatter is a solvent-based extract — usually made with butane or CO2 — that comes out hard and translucent, like amber glass. It gets its name from the way it breaks apart. Because it's been through a purging process to remove residual solvents, it tends to have a clean flavor and a stable consistency. It's one of the more potent concentrate forms and is typically handled with a dab tool. Not the easiest starting point for beginners, but popular among experienced users who like the clean hit.

Wax and Budder

Similar extraction process as shatter, but the agitation during processing creates a softer, opaque texture — more like a thick wax or whipped butter. Easier to handle than shatter because it doesn't break or stick as unpredictably. The texture varies: "crumble" is drier and more powdery, while "budder" is smoother and creamier. These tend to retain terpenes well, meaning good flavor alongside the potency.

Live Resin

This is where things get more interesting for flavor-focused consumers. Live resin is made from cannabis that was flash-frozen immediately after harvest — before it dries or cures. That preservation locks in a much fuller terpene profile than you'd get from dried material. The result is a concentrate with noticeably more complex aroma and flavor. It's one of the more expensive options, but if you care about the sensory experience and not just the effect, it's usually worth it.

Rosin

Rosin is solventless — no butane, no CO2, no chemical extraction at all. It's made by applying heat and pressure to flower (or hash), which squeezes out the resin. That matters to some consumers who prefer knowing there's no solvent involved in the process. The tradeoff is typically yield and consistency — rosin can be harder to produce at scale. Solventless products have been getting more popular across legal markets and you'll see them showing up more in Minnesota dispensaries.

Distillate

Distillate is the most refined form — a thick, viscous oil that's been processed to isolate specific cannabinoids, usually THC. It's extremely potent and nearly flavorless on its own, which is why it's often used in vape cartridges paired with added terpenes. Most of the vape carts you see at dispensaries are distillate-based. It's a clean, consistent product, though purists sometimes prefer less-processed options for the fuller terpene experience.

Vape Cartridges

Vapes are the easiest entry point into concentrates for most people. A cartridge screws onto a battery, and you inhale. No rig, no torch, no dab tool. The experience is more controlled and discreet than flower or dabbing. The cartridge will specify whether it's distillate-based, live resin, or another extract — live resin carts are increasingly common and offer noticeably better flavor than standard distillate carts.

How Do You Actually Use Concentrates?

The consumption method depends on the product type:

  • Dab rig — a water pipe designed for concentrates, heated with a torch and used with a nail or banger. The most traditional method, highest potency delivery, steepest learning curve.
  • E-rig (electric dab rig) — same idea as a traditional rig but electronically temperature-controlled. Brands like Puffco are popular. Easier and more consistent than torch-based rigs.
  • Vape pen — for cartridges and some pod-based concentrates. The most accessible option by far.
  • Dab straw / nectar collector — a simpler device where you heat the tip and touch it directly to the concentrate. Lower barrier to entry than a full rig.
  • Adding to flower — a small amount of wax or crumble on top of a bowl or in a joint significantly increases potency. A good way to try concentrates without committing to a full dab setup.

Possession Limits for Concentrates in Minnesota

Under current Minnesota law, adults 21+ can possess up to 8 grams of cannabis concentrate in a public place. At home in a private residence, reasonable personal-use amounts are permitted — the law doesn't set a hard cap for home storage the way it does for flower. That 8-gram public limit applies across all concentrate forms: wax, shatter, oil, live resin, all of it combined.

Should You Start With Concentrates?

Honestly, probably not if you're brand new to cannabis. The potency gap between flower and concentrates is significant, and having some baseline familiarity with how cannabis affects you makes the experience much more predictable. If you're an experienced flower consumer who's curious about stronger effects, better flavor, or a more efficient consumption method — concentrates are a natural next step.

If you decide to try them, start small. A dab the size of a grain of rice is a reasonable starting point. You can always do more; you can't undo too much.
